What's it really like? Location: Nowhere else in Morocco has compromised itself for tourism in quite the same way as Tangier and yet despite inroads made by commercialization there remains a medieval vein running through it. In recent years Tangier has fallen from favour in a big way, indeed few tour operators include it in their brochures these days, preferring instead to send their clients to friendlier, Agadir. The city has in the past had problems with crime and there are ongoing policing measures to keep the perpetrators at bay with the aim of wooing the holidaymakers back. Along the seafront large hotels reflect Tangier's glory days and still attract guests from all over the world. Not recommended as a winter destination for sun lovers. Beaches: One wide stretch of sand cut off from the resort by a main road and a railway line running parallel. Beach bars serve daytime drinks and snacks during the summer months. Tourists are advised to stay off the beach after dark due to criminal activities. Days out: Well placed for excursions to mountain villages or day trips to Spain. Tangier has a bustling medina and some good shopping opportunities. Nights out: Evening entertainment tends to be limited to the hotels. Parts of Tangier are still considered unsafe for holidaymakers at night. Bucket and Spade Brigade: Agadir is much more child friendly. |
