What's it really like? Transfer time: Approx 35 minutes Location: Sunny Beach is well-established resort with no real focus other than the beach. The hotels and apartments appear bland against the green backdrop although, as the buildings thin out towards the edge of town nature balances up the concrete lego bricks. Some of the larger hotel chains such as RIU have now established themselves here and in Golden Sands bringing a touch of class to the area. The long promenade is pedestrianised and bustling in the evening, especially during the busy months. Unfortunately Sunny Beach's reputation as a family resort is still marred by a sleazy side such as prostitution although the authorities are trying clean up the area's image. Sadly, we do get reports of girls plying their trade on the promenade, so a broad-minded approach is required or avoid Bulgaria! Beaches: 3km of glorious sand which is 100m wide in some places. The sea is clean and a recent winner of the Blue Flag Award. The beach is also served by several snack bars and parasols, plus there's a good range of watersports available. Days out: The shops in Sunny Beach provide mainly tourist essentials at budget prices so there's little for anyone harbouring more luxurious tastes. The main commercial area is a pedestrianised street in the town centre with smaller clusters of shops scattered about. Half and hour away is the city of Varna which is a gold mine for shoppers and needs at least a couple of days to explore. In Varna you'll also find a beautiful monastery preserved in the rock face and in the city centre there's an ancient square, roman fortress and the cathedral. The dolphinarium at Varna is also a popular day out on its own. Nearby Nessebar is worth a visit for its scenic harbour, and for a touch of sophistication the resort of Elenite is just up the coast offering 4km of almost unspoilt beach. Nights out: Nightlife can get lively but it's mainly aimed at families with a fair selection of bars. Many local dishes are on the menu although fast food giants are also competing with the more traditional restaurants. Quality food is a rarity in Sunny Beach and youll often find only frozen or canned vegetables available. Bucket and Spade Brigade: A great beach resort for the kids.
