What's it really like ? Transfer time: Approx 30 minutes Location: St George's and St Julian's are set around two bays linked by a coastal road. Malta's answer to San Antonio? Not quite, but the resorts are beginning to earn a similar reputation. The old fishing harbour retains its traditional houses that help lend the town what little appeal there is and remains a picturesque reminder of how life used to be. Those in search of nightlife flock here for dusk 'til dawn action. Some parts are renowned for being noisy, particularly in the Paceville area where there's a concentration of bars and clubs. Traffic noise can also be a nuisance due to a busy main road which cuts a swathe through the town. St George's is somewhat quieter with traditional dwellings converted into restaurants. The promenade also links St Julian's with Sliema - Malta's largest resort. Not recommended for less mobile due to steep hills. Beaches: St George's Bay has a pocket-handkerchief-sized pebbly beach which inevitably gets crowded. Rock bathing is popular all along the coast. An area known Ix-Xatt to Spinola has been deemed unsafe to bathe in by the Public Health Department due to pollution. Seek more advice locally or from your tour operator. Days out: Water sports include water-skiing and scuba-diving. Golf close-by. A bus terminal links the town to Valletta. Innumerable shops and modest supermarkets. Nights out: Throbbin'. Lively bars and clubs, plus a multi-plex cinema. Every kind of restaurant scattered about from pit-stops to sophisticated candle-lit dinners. Things tend to be more restrained around the fishing harbour. Bucket and Spade Brigade: Not much for active youngsters. St George's tiny beach offers safe bathing for children but is always crowded. |
