Sousse

What's it really like?

Transfer time: Approx 30 minutes

Location:

Sousse is an odd mix; a major industrial city which co-exists with a holiday resort.

Grand hotels set in acres of manicured gardens line the coast, spanning out from the main focal point; the busy port which local life revolves around.

Having such a thriving commercial centre on your doorstep, along with the old walled city can make for an interesting visit.

In places it is hard to tell you are in a Muslim country, then turn a corner and there is the medina which has parts dating back to 859AD. The more you explore the curiouser it gets; old trains chug their way through the main city square competing with trucks, mopeds and donkeys, whereas within five minutes you could be on a camel safari.

Be prepared for some familiar city sites, tatty back streets and hassle from souvenir sellers.

Beaches:

The best beaches are out of town along the hotel strip. These are sandy, gently shelving and stretch for miles with plenty of water sports.

There is little natural shade so parasols are a permanent fixture.

Overcrowding is a problem near to the hotels where sun worshippers can also be plagued by traders peddling pottery, etc.

Days out:

The medina is home to most of the city's attractions. Behind those walls are scores of narrow streets lined with bazaars and Aladdin's Caves of tourist junk. It is steeped in reminders of ancient living and a delight to wander in.

The focal point being the Great Mosque which unfortunately is out of bounds to tourists.

Other attractions include and old fort which offers excellent views, camel or train rides and a 27-hole golf course close by. Most essential shopping needs can be found in the new city.

Nights out:

Bars and cafés in town supplemented by dancing and 'live' entertainment in the hotels. An abundance of restaurants with anything from traditional cuisine to Chinese food.

Bucket and Spade Brigade:

The gently-shelving beach of soft sand is a major attraction. Children will also enjoy exploring the medina, in particular the old fort. The busy modern city of Sousse may be a little over powering for younger ones.
