What's it really like? Transfer time: Approx 90 minutes. Location: Backed by steep mountains Sorrento is a sophisticated and up market resort mainly suitable for mature couples. Not recommended for those looking for home-from-home 'Costa-type' comforts. The architecture in the centre is Victorian and most of it has been lovingly restored supplemented by some complimentary modern developments on the edge of town. Like you'd expect from any Italian town the narrow streets which lead to the main square are busy and somewhat noisy with scooters being the main mode of transport for the locals. Due to the hilly location it is unsuitable for the less mobile.
Beaches: An admission price is charged for the best stretch of sand on the edge of town otherwise make do with a couple of tiny patches of shingle down some stoney paths. There are also a few wooden bathing platforms. Water sports available. Days out: Exploring Sorrento is a joy with its labyrinth of narrow streets and squares brimming with cafés and shops. There are spectacular views right on the doorstep. Excursions available to Pompeii, Naples and Mount Vesuvius. Boat trips to Capri. Shopping is an adventure thanks to the scores of outlets for traditional local goods and souvenirs. Nights out: Eating out is the main pastime and there's plenty of choice of restaurants which are also popular with the thousands of Italians who also visit the resort and appreciate the local specialties. A few music-bars and nightclubs add to the mix. Bucket and Spade Brigade: Nothing much here for children. |
