Sliema What's it really like ? Transfer time: Approx 30 minutes Location: Sliema claims to be Malta's most fashionable resort and yet Marbella it's not ! Sadly, modern architects are the poor relation to those who designed the beautiful ancient palaces and buildings of which the islanders are so rightly proud. Despite being Malta's most bloated resort building work continues and the skyline is dotted with cranes so check with your tour operator to avoid it. This busy town has a popular, peaceful promenade which is lined with concrete apartment blocks, a few tame bars and designer shops stretching to St. Julian's Bay. It's a magnet for quiet walks around the enclosed bay and marina. The views across the bay to Valetta are quiet stunning - not pretty but picturesque. The area known as Tigne on the headland is more modern and less developed, separated as it is from the town by the main road and yet still within easy reach of the amenities. Beaches: No beach. Bathing off the promenade which run the length of the town but the water's deep and only safe for strong swimmers. Bars serve snacks and drinks along the seafront. Days out: A golf course at nearby Marsa. Ferries or buses to nearby Valletta. Boat trips around the harbour and to other Maltese sights worth seeing such as Comino and Gozo. A vast range of high street shops including Marks and Spencer, Next etc. See our Malta main page for a full list of excursions. To fully enjoy the sites around the island we recommend hiring a car. Nights out: Mainly quiet bars and a few clubs but nothing rowdy, plus plenty of restaurants. Bucket and Spade Brigade: Not much to amuse little ones unless your accommodation provides activities for them. The busy main road must also be taken into consideration. |
