Shiathos Town Centred around a busy harbour, Skiathos Town is a working port which dates back more than 150 years (see above photo). Although not many people opt to stay around the centre the streets are usually bustling with tourists who flock here for the shopping and the numerous boat trips which leave from the harbour. Because the island is only 7 miles in length the capital attracts day trippers while the harbour brings in ferries and cruise ships. Smaller streets branch off from the main shopping strip and become packed at peak times. Days Out: Buses to other resort, and water-taxis to most beaches along the south coast. Donkey ride to the monastery. Nights Out: The centre of the island's nightlife is here, consisting of a pleasant mix of tavernas, bars and a few clubs for dancing but nothing too rowdy. Beach: Not the best on the island but adequate. It's about half-a- mile out of town with snack bars and other facilities. Transfer time: 15 minutes Achladies Some parts of this modern resort can be hilly. The town comprises a handful of shops and tavernas scattered around the small apartment accommodation. Days Out: Little in the way of local entertainments except, perhaps for hill walking. Skiathos Town is the main starting point for day trips, etc. Small supermarkets provide the essentials Nights Out: Generally quiet, taverna-style restaurants offering the usual tourist menus and some 'live' music. Beach: Shingle and course sand with Watersports and snack bars. Most people opt to hop on a bus to some better beaches along the south coast. Transfer time (approx): 30 minutes. |
