What's it really like? Transfer time: Approx 20 minutes. Location: Italy's answer to Benidorm, Rimini tries hard to be a family seaside resort but has had its image tarnished in recent years due to its notorious red-light district. It nevertheless remains popular with many nationalities and has no trouble filling to capacity the hundreds of hotels and apartment blocks during the summer months. This party town is a magnet for youth thanks to its nightlife and amenities. The original town consists of narrow streets radiating out from two authentic squares and is set inland about a 10 minute walk from the resort. Beaches: A formidable stretch of sand (10 miles long) absolutely rammed with loungers and garish parasols. It provides safe bathing, good quality sand and water sports.
Days out: Rimini's historic roots can be traced through the nearby Roman remains. There are quaint villages in the surrounding hills which are well worth exploring. For the more adventurous it is possible to reach Venice and Rome from here. Nearby Cattolica has a water park and dolphinarium. Nights out: Bright lights attract thick crowds along the main coastal road in the evening which is lined with bars and restaurants. The nightlife is what many visitors come here for and they're well catered for with an abundance of clubs banging out the latest imported sounds and trying to compete with Ibiza and Ayia Napa. Literally hundreds of eating options available, mainly pizza-places although a few formal restaurants also exist. A night bus service runs along the main drag and operates until dawn. Bucket and Spade Brigade: The beach provides safe bathing for children and is popular with families who can cope with the crowds. Be wary that the mood among revelers in the town at night can become boisterous. |
