What's it really like ? Transfer time: Approx 50 minutes Location: Served by Paphos Airport, Polis is centred around an authentic town square with a friendly, bustling atmosphere Here you could be a million miles away from the purpose-built resorts and enjoy a more traditional Cypriot experience. Some of the architechture attracts daytrippers but otherwise this is a quiet, unspoilt area surrounded by olive groves and countryside. More recent developments are low-rise and built in the traditional style to blend in with their surroundings so the result is a pleasant mix of old and new. Beaches: Less than a mile from the town centre is the main sandy beach surrounded by vegetation. It is considered a safe stretch of coast for swimming and offers a beach restaurant which also serves snacks and drinks through the day Plus there's the convenience of changing facilities. Days out: The ancient church in the town is worth a visit if you can tear yourself away from the watersports along the beach Further afield are The Tombs of Kings which date from about 3 BC with spectacular architecture from the period - take extreme care with children due to an unguarded drop. Also popular with day trippers are the stunning Troodos Mountains, Kykkos Monastery and the divided city of Nicosia. Souvenir shops and mini-markets are scattered around; all the basic but no great choice. Nights out: A scattering of restaurants and a handful of bars is all you'll find in Polis and the menus tend to be dominated by fresh fish although the usual tourist taste buds are also catered for . Bucket and Spade Brigade: The gently shelving beach offers safe play and swimming for kids. Note: Some youngsters may find the heat too intense during the very hot summer months. |
