Playa de las Americas/Los Cristianos What's it really like? Transfer time: Approx 25 minutes Location: The volcano which forms the scenic backdrop may be dormant but the centre of Playa de las Americas erupts into life every night of the year. Cold lager has replaced the hot lava which spewed from Mount Teide hundreds of years ago. It's the place to come to push the party season to the limit with the ultimate in nightlife as well as some low-life. Drug-pushers, pick-pockets and time-share touts can drive you nuts although the authorities claim it's all under control. The two towns are linked by a promenade with yet more bars along its length. 'Playa', in particular can get boisterous - Los Cristianos is more restrained. The two resorts are now linked by the new marine stroll which
features a lengthy semi-circular pavement along the beach line Beaches: At first glance the main beach looks like an oil slick - mostly charcoal coloured sand except for some imported brown stuff which forms a newer, artificial stretch. Extremely crowded at peak times. Every kind of water sport is available. Days Out: Mount Teide offers spectacular views as you journey through the barren volcanic landscape where scenes from 'Stars Wars' were allegedly filmed. There's also a water park bang in the middle of the resort and two golf courses close by. Boat trips to see wild dolphins off the coast - more chance of seeing them tamed at the sea life centre near Puerto de la Cruz. Nights Out:
Bucket and Spade Brigade: Many outgoing, broadminded families love the action these two resorts have to offer. Others will find it all a bit too boisterous. Generally the best advice is to find a good hotel geared up for families away from the centre of 'Playa', and in particular away from the rowdy area known as 'Veronica's'. |
