What's it really like? Transfer time: Approx 90 minutes Location: Popular with Greek day trippers at weekends and other Europeans during the summer, Pefkohori is set neatly around a quiet seafront promenade. The new resort of low-rise apartments sprawls out along the beach front which has a few bars and cafés of its own. Beyond the main road is the old village linked by a small network of winding streets lined with a handful of shops and tavernas. The authentic buildings can hardly be called pretty but the surrounding countryside of pine-clad hills makes up for it. A resort to suit undemanding couples and families. Beaches: A very narrow strip runs parallel with the promenade while a further 300 yards away the beach widens and becomes shingle. Some natural shade on the outskirts of town where the hillside extends down to the coast, this is also a good place for snorkeling. Watersports available. Days out: Very little for lively holidaymakers in the immediate vicinity other than the beach activities and walks in the countryside. The original village is a pleasure to explore. Local amenities are adequate with a fair selection of tourist shops concentrated in the old quarter or scattered about the resort. Several buses a day go to Thessalonika (2 hours) which has a greater selection of shops and attractions. Boat trips to Mount Athos. Nights out: There's a bit of everything going on after dark; quiet tavernas along the promenade, music bars, some dancing and karaoke. Nothing rowdy. A good choice of eateries from the more traditional which are geared up for the many Greeks who holiday here to the usual tourist restaurants including Chinese or Indian. Bucket and Spade Brigade: A good beach holiday for the young. |
