What's it really like ? Transfer time: Approx 25 minutes Location: Steeped in Cyprus's rich history with an abundance of ancient sites nearby. Not many resorts on Cyprus have retained much charm - Paphos has therefore succeeded where others have failed. The focal point is undoubtedly the harbour (pictured above), overlooked, not by multi-storey carbuncles but by an old castle, and home to quaint café bars and restaurants. Development hasn't ignored Paphos, however - the busy main coastal road is lined with shops, bars and restaurants. In the town centre some accommodation may be affected by loud music and traffic noise. Nestling at the foot of the Troodos Mountains, about a mile from the coast is the original old town of Paphos which has hardly changed. Beaches: Strong breezes often whip up dangerous sea conditions and a flag system operates on the main beaches. Tides often bring with them some rather unpleasant flora and fauna. The town beaches are of poor quality, imported sand mixed with shingle; Coral Bay, 7km away is better. Days out: Wonders of the ancient world are on the doorstep; The Tombs of Kings date from about 3 BC with spectacular architecture from the period - take extreme care with children due to an unguarded drop. Dungeons beneath the old fort in the harbour can be explored. Day trippers also flock to see the famous Mosaics while the more adventurous go off exploring the Troodos Mountains. Pleasure boat trips go along the coast and there's a full-size golf course about 18km out of town. Paphos is bursting with souvenir shops and mini-markets along with some arty outlets. Nights out: A mish-mash of nightlife combining quiet tavernas, music bars and a few clubs, with a few that will appeal to clubbers by filling the floors with foam.. Along the main street is an abundance of restaurants including Chinese and Indian, in addition to the usual tourist fayre. Paphos also has a two screen cinema. Bucket and Spade Brigade: Beaches in town are unsuitable for children. Coral Bay is ideal, although strong currents can be a hazard all along this coast so flag systems operate. Paphos has an aquarium and there's a water park at Limassol. Note: Some youngsters may find the heat too intense during the very hot summer months, inspite of a cooling sea breeze. |
