Paleokastritsa

What's it really like?

Transfer time: Approx 40 minutes

Location:

Corfu's most popular attraction after Corfu Town.

Paleokastritsa is set around 3 main bays and gets packed with day trippers throughout the season.

They invade from all sides; coaches clog up the narrow roads leading into town while boat trips and luxury yachts sail in to admire the scenery.

Apart from the beautiful green hills which provide the back drop, a monastery ( Moní Theotókou) is the main focus of attention.

Quite a hilly location and unsuitable for the less mobile.

Beaches:

Stunningly picturesque beaches, a mix of sand and shingle, lapped by deep, cold waters fed by undersea streams.

Water sports available including scuba-diving around the bays.

Days out:

Paleokastritsa is the day out for most visitors to Corfu and you may want to escape the crowds.

Boat trips sail to unspoilt coves and beaches. On the headland is the famous 17th century monastery, a Mecca for thousands of tourists every year who come to see, among other things the ceiling carving of the 'Tree of Life'.

Local shops sell basics and market stalls do a roaring trade in souvenirs for the day trippers.

More choice at Corfu Town, 45 minutes away by local bus.

Nights out:

Good choice of low-key tavernas, plus a club or two on the edge of the resort, nothing rowdy.

Some top-notch restaurants in addition to those providing for the usual touristy tastes.

Bucket and Spade Brigade:

Not an ideal place for young children due to hilly location. The main beach is pebbly and has a steep shelf a few yards out.
