What's it really like ? Transfer time (approx): 1 hour 45 minutes Location: Ocho Rios is a sprawling, busy town close to some of Jamaica's best features which attract day trippers in coaches and cruise ships. At peak times therefore, it can get extremely crowded especially around the main street and market where locals also go about their business. In places it is beginning to look decidedly tatty. By contrast the hotels are set against a thickly wooded backdrop and should provide a peaceful retreat. Like other Jamaican resorts it is considered risky to walk around at night especially alone. Ocho Rios will suit mainly couples and mature holidaymakers. Cruise passengers have long complained about hassle from over enthusiastic traders in the harbour which has led to the setting up of official 'Port Patrols' to tackle the problem. Beaches: Pure white sand and lush natural shade combine to make this a beach lovers paradise. There are one or two beach front bars attached to hotels which offer a cool place to sit and sip. Sun loungers and parasols can be hired ... those shady trees look pretty but are also home to ants and other creepies. Water sports and pedaloes available. Days Out: Ocho Rios is perfect as a base for exploring the island's national treasures. Dunn's River Falls, the former mountain home of Bob Marley and river rafting. Golf is available nearby although there's more choice at Montego Bay. During the day is also a good time to eat out and sample some of the local jerk pork. The town has plenty of shops in commercial centres and a bustling market. Nights Out: A few bars which are also popular with locals. Generally, entertainment is hotel based and it is advisable to take a taxi if you do venture out at night. Restaurants which serve local dishes sit alongside some fast food establishments. Bucket and Spade Brigade: Only a handful of hotels are geared up for children. If you like to visit other hotels for a change of scenery it's worth checking first ... some establishments are off-limits to kids. The resort is handy for older ones who might enjoy the nearby attractions of Dunn's River, etc. |
