What's it really like? Transfer time: Approx 90 minutes Location: Possibly Greece's answer to stylish Marbella, though more picturesque. 'AgNik' as it is sometimes lovingly labeled oozes character and is ideal for those seeking sophisticated nightlife. It is a bustling resort based around a quaint old harbour beside the so-called 'Bottomless Lake', with shingle beaches on either side of the town. Shops, bars and tavernas line the quayside becoming the focal point of the evening activities. It is a perfect setting for anyone in search of an up market, eventful holiday in extremely pretty surroundings. The resort may be unsuitable for the less mobile due to its fairly steep roads and streets. Beaches: A great disappointment for sand lovers. Four or five tiny shingle pits close to the town which can get crowded. Water sports available. Better beaches several miles away. Flag warning systems operate due to strong currents. Days out: Boat trips along the coast and to nearby Spinalonga which is a deserted island leper colony - very eerie. Aghios Nikolaos displays archeological finds from nearby excavations and traditional folk items in two museums. (For other sites see our main Crete page). Behind the harbourfront chic boutiques compete with the more modest tourist shops. Jewellery and locally made handicrafts are in abundance. Nights out: The harbour which is beautifully illuminated at night is the main focal point with it's fashionable bars, some with 'live' music and dancing. Smart restaurants and traditional tavernas complete the scene. It can get over-crowded. Bucket and Spade Brigade: Not ideal for very young children due to the lack of decent beaches and hilly location. Probably better suited to families with older kids. |
