What's it really like ? Transfer time: Approx 60 minutes Location: Set around a string of coves, Cala d'Or is one of Majorca's most picturesque resorts which also embraces nearby Cala Gran, Cala Esmerelda and Cala Ferrera. With its smart marina the main town has been described as attracting the 'well-heeled' - but you won't feel out of place in your flip- flops. Many of the hotels and apartments have been designed to blend in with the landscape to give the area a traditional look, although the main centre isn't without a few commercial eyesores. During the summer months the beaches and town centre are at breaking point with visitors. Beaches: Lots of small sandy coves (see above) which become overcrowded at peak times. The water is quite shallow except for some of the stony inlets where rock diving provides some amusement. Days out: There are the usual water sports available, and glass bottom boat trips offer great views of the coastline, (didn't see much below the water, though ! ). These boats also serve as 'sea-buses' between the bays. Shops around the centre range from 'chic' boutiques to the more familier souvenir sellers.
Nights out: The marina tends to be the focal point, especially in the evenings, but it can be a long walk from some of the more far flung nooks and crannies which comprise this resort. An abundance of restaurants serve the usual family fayre. For a few pesetas more there are places where you can dine out in style whilst admiring the yachts. Other nightlife tends to be limited to pavement bars, karaoke and hotel floor shows. A few clubs - but don't expect a foam party ! Bucket and spade brigade: Popular with familes due to the safe sandy beaches and apartment complexes. A tourist train can help get tired little legs from A to B, or there's taxi rank in the centre. Most evenings there are one or two funfairs nearby for the under 12's, with some rather tame rides and bouncy castles. Not much for teenagers. |
