What's it really like ? Transfer time (approx): 1 hour 45 minutes Location: Negril has earned a reputation for being Jamaica's sex and drugs holiday capital with prostitutes (male and female) plying their trade openly, therefore it may not be suitable for everyone. Unlike many of Jamaica's other resorts, Negril is set on flat terrain with one palm-fringed beach stretching over several miles. The mood in this tourist town is more laid back mainly due to there being less industry, although the beach does attract lots of day trippers. All of the hotels are low rise and hug the coast, staking their claim to large portions of sand. Such is the spread of this resort ( 7 miles) chances are you'll need transport to reach the centre where there's a handful of bars and restaurants. Suitable mainly for young couples. Beach: The best and longest in Jamaica - backed by lush vegetation and beautifully landscaped low-rise hotels. Watersports available outside most hotels along with sun loungers and parasols. Popular with daytrippers, and you might get hassled by traders selling souvenirs. Days Out: The resort is somewhat isolated from the rest of the island due to distance and hills so it can be a long bumpy ride to reach Jamaica's other beauty spots. However, Dunn's River Falls, the Blue Mountains, river rafting and Ocho Rios are well worth a visit. Negril's shops serve basic needs. Eating out during the day is popular with hotel guests who feel they can relax more during the daylight hours. Shopping here is limited to a small commercial centre, supplemented by street vendors. Nights Out: A small concentration of bars and restaurants near the cliffs at the west end along with a night club or two which also attract a lot of locals. 'Live' music is a big feature of the nightlife in Negril and homegrown talent attracts large crowds of holidaymakers and Jamaicans. However, the majority of visitors stick to the hotel-based entertainment. Get a taxi if you feel the need to venture out at night. Bucket and Spade Brigade: The gently shelving beach is good for kids and older ones might enjoy the excursions to Dunn's River Falls etc, although they will have to endure a lengthy coach journey to get to them. Some hotels don't encourage visitors under 16. . |
