What's it really like? Transfer time (approx): 15 minutes Location: The very name; Montego Bay conjures up thoughts of palm-fringed beaches lapped by the turquoise Caribbean Ocean. 'Mo Bay' is also Jamaica's second city with a large residential population and busy roads. The town is divided into the modern tourist resort and the main working area, backed by a screen of lush hills. The business end of town is not the place for visitors to be wandering around, even if you are offered the services of a local 'guide'. Beaches: The resort's main tourist beaches are among the finest in the world, although they come at a price -you will be charged a small fee for using them. Each has natural shade, with beautiful gently sloping sand and a few hut-style cafés nestled among the palms. Watersports available. Days Out: 'Aqua Sol' theme park which has taken up residence on the main Walter Fletcher beach isn't a traditional water park. Instead the activities include beach-based games, Watersports and go-karting. Locally, golfers can choose between 4 courses. Scuba diving and snorkeling is available with some fascinating coral life to be seen. TIP: Heavy downpours often churn up the contents of the seabed and can spoil your sub-aqua session. Also see this website's Health Guide. Further afield there's the popular Dunn's River Falls, Negril, Ocho Rios, Blue Mountains and river rafting. Shopping along the 'hip strip' is limited to a couple of commercial centres with souvenirs, duty free and banking facilities in addition to the street markets where stall holders compete for your custom. Expect to do a bit of haggling. Nights Out: You will be advised to take a taxi to even the nearest restaurant at night. Most visitors stay loyal to the entertainment at their hotel. Bucket and Spade Brigade: Not ideal for kids unless they're content with beaches and the pool. Check your accommodation has facilities for children. |
