Monte Gordo
What's it really like?
Transfer Time: Approx 80 minutes
Location:
Monte Gordo is a bright, sprawling and modern resort that's become a
serious competitor to its neighbouring holiday hotspots along the Algarve that
enjoys the benefit of being slightly more easygoing than its rivals.
At the rear of the town there's a protected natural woodland and the
geography makes it quite distinct from other resorts for being a lot
flatter with beaches backed by sand dunes, with no rocks and steep
climbs. This makes the area extremely suitable for the less mobile.
The apartments and hotels are well spread throughout the town giving it
a light, airy feel.
A main road hugs the resort's coast and separates the beach from the
shops along the main drag. The promenade is wide and nicely landscaped,
ideal for evening strolls by the sea.
Some of the charm of the old fishing village has been retained.
Temperatures tend to be a degree or two warmer than other resorts
further west.
Beaches:
A wide sandy beach backed by a promenade with dunes and pine trees
further out of town. The sand is cleaned daily in the peak season and
rarely feels crowded due to its size. The sea can be quite choppy and
weather conditions may not favour inexperienced swimmers. A lifeguard is
on duty during the summer months.
Days Out:
Boat trips on the Guadiana river are a novelty and jeep safari's into
the forest are popular
The beach offers a variety of water sports and further afield are the
sights of Spain on a short, 15 minute ferry journey.
Faro - about 80 minutes away is home to the Algarve's biggest shopping
centre with more than a hundred stores, 20 restaurants and a
hypermarket. Otherwise there are souvenir shops and supermarkets nearby.
Nights Out:
Not a place for serious 'Night People' although there are plenty of
low-key bars, some offering 'live' music and a club or two plus a
casino. Seafront restaurants serve up local dishes alongside the usual
fast food eateries and pizzerias.
Bucket and Spade Brigade:
The beach is a magnet for youngsters, although the main road backs onto
it so parents are advised to keep little ones on a close watch. Those
wanting a bit more would be better off in Vilamoura or Albufeira where
there are water parks to keep them amused.
