Monastir/Skanes What's it really like? Approx 15 minutes from Monastir Airport Note: Skanes is a suburb of Monastir about 8km away where most of the resort's hotels are situated. Set around a modern marina, Monastir has given itself completely to tourism. Parts of the original town have been preserved, like the medina although today it has been transformed into a Mecca for souvenir hunters. Even the ancient fort (Ribat) has been rebuilt over the years and was used as a backdrop for films such as Monty Python's 'The Life of Brian'. Most of the newer hotels are grand affairs built along the coast and have staked a claim to their own patch of beach. In light of their typical Tunisian extravagance these developments (in an area known as Skanes) are set in acres of manicured gardens and can be some distance from the centre of Monastir. A tourist road train serves most accommodation and taxis are fairly cheap. Beaches: Most visitors tend to stick to the beaches outside their hotels where the soft sand is well maintained. Water sports are ample as are parasols. Local traders often patrol the beaches selling pottery and can become tiresome. Days out: The local medina is stuffed with souvenir shops run by over-enthusiastic traders and is well worth a visit, although it can become claustrophobic after sundown. Another local attraction is the Ribat - an ancient fort which has been built and rebuilt 900 years. Golfers can choose from two 18-hole courses nearby. For the more adventurous camel safaris through the local countryside are popular. Local shops are supplemented by a Saturday market near the bus station. Nights out: Lots of tourist restaurants (burgers, pizzas, etc.) around the marina, more authentic dishes can be found in the medina. Nightlife is restricted to dancing and 'live' entertainment in the hotels. Bucket and Spade Brigade: Children should enjoy the safe, sandy beaches. Not much else for little ones, though. |
