What's it really like ? Transfer time: Approx 80 minutes Location: The shimmering white village of Mojacar nestles on a hill overlooking the main tourist resort along the coast. With its wonderful maze of narrow streets, the old place has lost none of its traditional charm and mystique. Quaint little shops and bars are waiting to be discovered around every corner, oozing authentic Spanish hospitality. The village itself is only accessible by bus, taxi or car and parking is limited. Note also that the streets are cobbled and extremely steep in places. Down below along the coast is the modern resort consisting of low-rise apartment complexes built with some thought for tradition. A new marina has been proposed for an area of coast near to the Hotel Indalo and there is some building work in the area. The journey from Almeria airport takes you through some beautiful mountainous scenery alnong a new stretch of motorway Beaches: A recently extended stretch of beach which is pebbly in places with better quality sand away from the centre. The coastal road gets busy and at some point you will have to cross it to get to the beach. Watersports are available. Days Out: Some lovely inland villages to explore including Mojocar itself. Much further afield is Granada and a 'wild-west' town set in Tabernas desert country (see Almeria main page). Shopping in the old town is more of an adventure - there's even a small modern 'mall' just off the main square. A couple of modest supermarkets specialising in familier British products have sprung up in the main resort along the seafront. Nights Out: A fairly lively night-on-the-town can be had along the coast where there are plenty of bars and a couple of discos...all in good taste. Otherwise jump in a taxi and relax on a quiet night up in the village. Many restaurants along the promenade belong to ex-pats who cater mainly for British tastes with a few exceptions for those who like the international flavours of Indian and Chinese food. Bucket and Spade Brigade: More of a grown-up resort but the beach is pleasant, even though it shelves steeply in places, and there's the water park in Vera which is a welcome diversion. |
