Mellieha Bay/Paradise Bay

What's it really like ?

Transfer time: Approx 50 minutes

Location:

Back-to-back resorts with a few miles of inland road separating them.

These two resorts are popular with locals at weekends due to the beaches and the proximity with the ferry landings to Gozo.

Not as built-up as other Maltese resorts, enjoying a picturesque countryside location but, once again the Maltese modern architecture spoils the view.

Some visitors may feel somewhat isolated by the rural setting of these resorts, especially Paradise Bay which is reached via a steep mountain road.

Mellieha has adequate amenities with one main shopping street; a busy main road which serves the village and links it to the beach.

The centre is perched on a steep hill so is unsuitable for the less mobile.

Paradise Bay is mainly for those seeking total seclusion beyond the hotel.

Beaches:

Both resorts boast good safe beaches - a rare commodity on Malta.

Mellieha Bay is the island's largest stretch of sand skirted by a main road. The novelty of a beach attracts locals at weekends and public holidays so expect crowds. The sand is pebbly in places and the sea gently shelving.

Paradise Bay is smaller with steps leading down to the sand. A steep ledge just off the shore may make bathing hazardous for young children.

Days out:

Watersports available on Mellieha beach. Both resorts are handy for trips to neighbouring islands, Gozo and Comino.

Regular buses link the area to the busier resorts and sights further down the coast, see our Malta main page. Mellieha has a few shops for essentials and souvenirs.

To fully enjoy the sites around the island we recommend hiring a car.

Nights out:

Bars and restaurants in Mellieha although very little choice.

Bucket and Spade Brigade:

Melleiha has the best beach for kids; clean sand with pebbles and shallow waters making it safe to swim. Very little for more demanding youngsters in resort.

Paradise Bay isn't recommended for children due to its tiny beach and deep water a short way out.
