Luxor

What's it really like ?

Transfer time: Approx 20 minutes

Location:

Steeped in Egypt's rich history with an abundance of ancient sites nearby Luxor is also known as 'The City of Palaces'.

On the banks of the Nile this bustling resort combines ultra-modern hotels within a stone's throw of the country's great heritage making it one of the oldest tourist destinations in the world.

The main focal point is the historic sites of the Temple of Luxor set in the old town and the temple of Karnak.

Wherever you go in Egypt there's no escaping the enthusiastic selling techniques of the street traders and the sooner you come to terms with this aspect of life the better.

Some parts of the town are in deacy and it can come as a shock to guests more used to the luxurious hotel developments along the river.

Note: The possibility of terrorist attacks on tourists in Egypt remains and the latest advice from the British Foreign Office should be sought before booking and travelling

Most hotels have 24 hour armed guards and gates

Beaches:

There are no beaches in Luxor and swimming or even dipping your toe in the Nile is not recommended.

Days out:

Wonders of the ancient world are on the doorstep; The Temple of Luxor and The Temple of Karnak are major tourist attractions.

The Mummification Museum and Luxor Museum display artifacts from the famous sites around Egypt

The shopping streets are hectic and noisy in the old town and bartering is a way of life

The hotels also cater for those with more sophisticated tastes and more money!

Pleasure trips on boats called feluccas go along the River Nile and there's a full-size chamoionship golf course

Nights out:

Most visitors 'eat in' during the evening when the town becomes a dark and somewhat intimidating place. Not necessarily dangerous, just forbidding.

The hotels also provide the best of the evening entertainment with no shortage of shows and 'live' music.

Bucket and Spade Brigade:

Only suitable for children with a strong desire to see the sights. Otherwise, if trips out pales the only kids-friendly entertainment is in the hotels.

Note: Some youngsters may find the heat too intense during the very hot summer months, inspite of the air-conditioning.
