Lloret de Mar

What's it really like ?

Transfer time: Approx 35 minutes

Location:

Multi-storey blocks of apartments along the front cater for the intense British and German tourist trade.

Greener and less claustrophobic towards the rear of the resort while the seafront is enhanced by a beautifully landscaped promenade.

Singles come here looking for some serious killer nights and the place is rammed with music bars. The main street is so bright you need shades even when the sun's giving it Zzzzz's.

But in this poor man's 'San An' - the action seems somewhat limited and real 'up for it' party animals may be disappointed with the scene.

Plus there's a tough battle going on to restore some normality, therefore families and more mature visitors aren't willing to give-up Lloret without a fight.

Noise can be a problem for light sleepers staying in the town centre.

Beaches:

Broad and long enough (just) to cope with the peak demands the beach is a recent winner of the 'Blue Flag' for cleanliness.

Consisting of gritty sand and shingle it shelves steeply in places so care must be taken by non-swimmers.

Some rocky headlands to explore and bags of water sports.

Days out:

An 18 hole golf course, crazy golf, ten-pin bowling and go-karting are among the daytime activities.

Boat trips to other resorts along the coast and walks to neighbouring coves are also popular.

Culture can be found in Barcelona and at the monastery in Montserrat - almost a pilgrimage for many who come to see the famous Black Madonna.

Lloret is also close enough to a number of fun parks for those seeking more lively excursions.

Tourist shops galore around the resort, some designer gear (no guarantee it's authentic, though). More traditional shopping opportunities in Barcelona.

Nights out:

The seafront strip is lined with bars and restaurants, many geared up for Brits, with large screen TVs and familiar beers.

Dance-oholics can hit the few clubs, although choice is restricted.

Loads of tourist troughs to feed from and some varied menus, too although you'll need to search for it because quality is scarce.

Bucket and Spade Brigade:

Due to the steepness of the shoreline, the beach may not be safe for younger bathers or inexperienced swimmers.
