What's it really like ? Transfer time: Approx 60 minutes Location: Such is the growth around Limassol a new road has been constructed to cope with the influx of visitors. The traditional old town with its fishing harbour has survived to become almost a living museum of crafts and skills. It is also home to the main port for cruise ships. Development has spread along a 4 mile stretch of promenade and consists of mainly low-rise apartments set against the famous Troodos Mountains. Most of the apartments are set astride a busy seafront road and some accommodation along its route can be prone to traffic noise. Attracts mainly families and some young singles although not on the 18-30 circuit. Beaches: Poor by comparison to some of the island's other beaches. The main tourist beach is a fairly narrow stretch and consists of soft sand and pebbles and is a Blue Flag winner. It is enhanced by changing rooms, shower facilities and a snack bar. There are other less crowded beaches out of town. There are some pleasant coves to explore in the white rock formations but the scene is spoilt by an unsightly power station. Watersports and other facilities on hand, including beach bars and restaurants. Days out: Two water parks to choose from; one is a clone of Orlando's Wet n' Wild. The Fassouri water park is nicely landscaped and has plenty of space for loungers. The rides come highly recommended. The local beer, Keo is brewed here and offers guided tours around the brewery. Boat trips along the coast or mini-cruises to Israel and Egypt. The Sea Sponge Exhibition is popular. An 18-hole golf course about 20km away Extensive shopping opportunities, especially around the old town where many cottage industries are still in abundance. To fully enjoy the sites around the island we recommend hiring a car. Nights out: Not as buzzing as Ayia Napa however there's still a fair selection of clubs, pubs and 'live' music bars mainly concentrated in the Amathus and Yermasoyia areas. A bit more select near the old harbour. Restaurants scattered about with a large concentration along the seafront. Lots of international cuisine to choose from along the promenade; Indian and Italian, etc. many of very good quality to supplement the usual pizzas and burgers. Bucket and Spade Brigade: The generally poor town beaches can be a disadvantage for young ones along with the busy coastal road but there are others more suited to the young ones on the outskirts of the town. On the plus side; the water parks and play areas, mini-golf and bowling alley may be a welcome diversion. Note: Some youngsters may find the heat too intense during the very hot summer months. |
