What's it really like? Transfer time: Approx 15 minutes Location: Much of the tourism boom in Zakynthos is concentrated in this large resort of low-rise developments, centred around one of the best beaches on the island. Laganas is the natural nocturnal breeding ground for African loggerhead turtles and British partygoers. While those green-backed sea creatures head for the beach after sundown, young Brits flock into town for the nightlife which is making a name for itself on the 18-30 scene. Some noise is inevitable and it occasionally goes hand-in-hand with a bit of boisterous, but mostly good-natured behavior. Serious clubbers will be disappointed by the lack of choice. There are quieter spots on the outskirts of town. Beaches: 3km of gently shelving, compact sand - good for walking on but extremely crowded. The loggerhead turtles take priority and therefore Watersports, apart from pedaloes are banned so those in search of fun rides must head south to places like St Nicholas bay. Days out: Turtle spotting on glass-bottomed boats is popular Boat trips to the Blue Caves and Smuggler's Cove. On land there's crazy golf and go-karting. The resort's main street is lined with plenty of shops stocked up with the usual souvenirs, much of it loggerhead turtle-shaped. Nights out: Bars outnumber traditional tavernas by 10 to 1 and offer music, Karaoke and TV. A few clubs pump out bangin' sounds with foam parties and indoor fireworks being the latest gimmicks (usually no entry charge). Restaurants include English, Chinese, Indian and everything with chips!. Bucket and Spade Brigade: A good beach for little ones if they can put up with the crowds. Nightlife may be a bit too rowdy for small children. |
