What's it really like? Location: Often referred to as Disney's dormitory, Kissimmee is more than just a place to rest up between the parks, the area is a resort in itself, albeit more laid-back than I-Drive and with a somewhat gentler appeal. It is probably the nearest thing Orlando has to 'authentic' America, recreating that small town feel whilst still packing a wealth of attractions. What the locals were unable to cling onto from the past they have recreated in the shape of the 'Old Town' with its boardwalks and verandas, while new for 2001 are landscaped 'sidewalks' along the main road. This 30 million dollar project is providing ten-foot wide paths, with trees and benches along Highway 192, it is also causing some peak-time jams. Kissimmee is a sprawling town and a car is essential. Days out: Although handy for the major Disney parks there's also some driving to do for the other main attractions which are located along International Drive. Kissimmee's own water park is the smallest in Orlando and may suit the less adventurous. Other more sedate pastimes nearby include Splendid China, a miniature recreation of China's landmarks and World of Orchids.
Other attractions: Jungleland Zoo, Gatorland and Ripley's Believe It Or Not. Shop-a-holics can get their fix around the Old Town or in the local mall which has close on 50 shops - prices can be higher. There are 4 times that number of stores at Florida Mall. Drive times: Disney - 15 minutes, Universal - 25 minutes, SeaWorld - 20 minutes, Orlando Airport - 35 minutes, Sanford Airport - 60 minutes. Times are approximate and can vary accordingly. Nights out: Downtown Disney draws big crowds in the evening and the restaurants get booked sometimes days in advance. Partygoers will revel in the choice of nightclubs rammed into Pleasure Island and Graham Central Station For a more subdued evening nearer home the Old Town has about a dozen restaurants and Church Street Station provides nostalgic dining with specialties from around the globe. Stay around town on Friday and Saturday nights for the parade of classic cars. Children: Don't presume youngsters will want to spend ALL their time at the major attractions - they will welcome a break from the hectic pace and they are sure to enjoy a leisurely look around Gatorland or JungleLand Zoo. Dining out in the Old Town is also fun for the kids thanks to well maintained play area with a selection of activities for the younger ones. |
