What's it really like? Transfer time: Approx 75 minutes Location: Kalithea is a modern resort set beside a narrow beach against a back drop of pine forests and hills. Accommodation is low rise, scattered among the natural surroundings and the village has a cluster of shops and restaurants. The main centre is dissected by a busy through-road and pedestrians are often troubled by a lack of footpaths in places so care is needed especially at night when some streets are unlit. Apart from the traffic the pace here tends to be fairly unhurried and should suit undemanding couples and families. Not ideal for the less mobile due to the steepness of some of the roads. Beaches: A narrow stretch of sand lined with cafés and bars serving drinks and snacks during the day. Watersports available. At the end of a long day sunbathing it can be quite a tiring trek uphill to where most of the accommodation is situated. Days out: Very little to do in the immediate vicinity other than head for the beach and explore the remains of the Sanctuary of Zeus. All of the treasures found there are now on show in the Archeological Museum at Polygyros. Further afield boat trips go to Mount Athos (see Halkidiki main page) and buses operate regularly to sophisticated Thessalonika (90 minutes) which is home to the region's best museums and shops. Nights out: Quiet tavernas along the seafront, music bars with karaoke on the main road through the centre. Restaurants cater for mainly tourist tastes, supplemented by a few traditional Greek establishments. Bucket and Spade Brigade: A good, clean safe beach for the young ones, not much for lively teens. |
