What's it really like? Transfer time: Approx 60 minutes. Location: The famous writer, Lawrence Durrell (Gerald's brother) first put Kalámi on the map and his influence draws hundreds of day trippers at the height of the season, hence it is not the peaceful retreat it used to be. However it remains a very pretty and largely unspoilt village set around a quaint fishing harbour against a backdrop of cypress trees. In the evening, once the hoards have departed by sea and coach the resort returns to normal. Beaches: A long narrow sweep of a beach, mainly shingle which leads to the harbour. Limited water sports. Days out: Boat trips and boats for hire. Hill walking is also popular while the resort is also well placed for a trip to the top of Mount Pantokrátor which offers stunning views. Local shops sell basic necessities and gifts. Nights out: A few tavernas provide a relaxing place to unwind. Kassiopi has more nightlife. Bucket and Spade Brigade: Very little here for children. |
