What's it really like? Transfer time: Approx 20 minutes Location: Attracting loggerhead turtles and British families, Kalamaki is a laid back, no frills resort set among olive groves and open countryside. It is small, low-rise and well scattered, best-suited to those who prefer the simple things in life, so ideal for undemanding families and mature couples. There is also an up market feel about the place probably due to the pace of life...very civilized. Some roads are unlit at night so a torch may be useful. Beaches: Protecting the visiting loggerhead turtles is now a top priority so watersports are banned except for pedaloes. By day, however beach life exists pretty much as normal. This stretch is largely unspoilt with good clean sand backed by scrubland and cliffs. Days out: Sunbathing and swimming is about as hectic as it gets. Head to Laganas ( 5 minutes in a cab ) for boat trips and a bigger selection of shops. Nights out: Unlike its brash neighbour, Laganas just 2 miles away, Kalamaki has very little to offer after dark except for a handful of tavernas, a few bars (some with 'live' music) and occasional dancing. Restaurants tend to be fairly modest and friendly, and most offer a variety of the usual tourist food. Bucket and Spade Brigade: A great beach of gently shelving sand. Ideal for a quiet family holiday. |
