What's it really like? Transfer time: Approx 30 minutes Location: This large purpose-built resort is popular with Brits and despite it's size still gets crowded in the peak summer months. It's pleasant enough but uninteresting for anyone seeking something resembling the real Greece, because there isn't anything left. Multi-storey hotels overlook the beach and thanks to some clever landscaping they don't look out of place in this modern tourist town. Heavy traffic trundles along the palm tree-lined main road which links the airport to Rhodes Town. All the resort's amenities are concentrated along this highway so it can get noisy and busy. Beaches: A 4km strip of shingle, which is uncomfortable to walk on barefooted and cut-off from the resort by the busy coastal road. Watersports available - especially popular with windsurfers thanks to brisk sea breezes. Days out: Ixia is essentially a base for visiting other parts of Rhodes and therefore boat trips to Lindos and other attractions are popular. Rhodes Town, with all it's well-preserved historical sights, plus the hustle and bustle is just 3km away. The island's modern attractions; the water park and an 18-hole golf course are all within a 50 minute drive away. Souvenir shops and mini-markets compete with each other for pavement space along Ixia's seafront. Nights out: A vast number of modern bars and nightclubs - nothing too outrageous. Dozens of restaurants cater mainly for the undemanding diner with more 5 minutes away in Rhodes Town. Bucket and Spade Brigade: Children should be supervised on the pebbly beach due to strong currents and sea breezes. Parents should also be aware that the island's main coastal road runs through the resort and carries heavy traffic. |
