What's it really like ? Transfer time: Approx 60 minutes Location: A very popular yet peaceful resort attracting lots of Spanish visitors so expect plenty of local hospitality. A few Spanish phrases might also come in useful. Development here began in the early 1990's so Islantilla is totally purpose built towards tourism without the brashness of the resorts further down the coast. It caters best for mature couples and undemanding families. The town is dotted with luxury villas and some large hotel complexes while a pretty promenade hugs the beach. And what a beach! See below for on that. A small commercial area has grown up in the centre which is now the focal point of the resort. Note: The resort is served by a busy main road which may give off some unwanted traffic noise to nearby apartments. Check before you travel if you want guaranteed peace and quiet. Beach: This is without doubt the main attraction. 2km of fine sand backed by glorious dunes in some places or a promenade around the centre. Because the coastline is lapped by the Atlantic expect a breeze and some choppy waters. One or two beach bars provide the essentials likes drinks and snacks. Days Out: Some lovely inland villages to explore. Much further afield is Portugal about an hour away. Also Seville and Cadiz are worth a visit. Shopping in the resort is restricted to the usual tourist fare while self-caterers will find 2 adequate supermarkets. A fairly regular bus serves other local resorts. Golfers will certainly enjoy a round or two on the nearby 27 hole course. You may need a handicap. Nights Out: Very little nightlife and so far not much in the way of British influence so the restaurants tend to be fairly authentic and cater for the many Spanish holidaymakers in addition to other Europeans. There are also a few bars along the promenade offering great views for a quiet evening drink. Bucket and Spade Brigade: The beach is lovely for kids although caution is needed when swimming or paddling. There are some steep shelves and strong currents. The resort itself has little to offer in the way of entertainment. |
