Isla Canela

What's it really like ?

Transfer time: Approx 50 minutes

Location:

As its name suggests, Isla Canela is a small island linked by a bridge across the river Guadiana

Like all the resorts on the Costa de la Luz its purpose-built with the beach being the main attraction.

It is built around a neat, modern marina which is surrounded by a few bars and restaurants. Radiating out from here are a growing number of large hotel and apartment complexes.

Building work will be ongoing for a few years and you may want to check before you travel whether your accommodation will be affected.

Beach:

The lovely sands span 7kms around the resort and are backed by dunes. There are several places where sun loungers and parasols are for hire but you won't have to go far to find total peace and quiet.

Because the coastline is lapped by the Atlantic expect a breeze and some choppy waters.

A beach bar serves drinks, snacks and barbequed food.

Days Out:

Some lovely inland villages to explore and the authentic fishing village of Ayamonte is definitely worth exploring.

Slightly further afield is Portugal with its attractions including a water park and Zoomarine dolphin show.

Seville and Cadiz are also worth a visit.

Shopping in the resort is limited to the usual tourist paraphernalia and small supermercados.

A fairly regular bus serves other local resorts.

Golfers will certainly enjoy a round or two on the nearby 18-hole course or for a change there's a larger course at Islantilla

Nights Out:

Nothing brash or rowdy - just quiet relaxing evenings around the marina. Eating out is still fairly authentic with some tapas bars for good measure. Most places will also provide a menu for those who're less adventurous with their food.

Bucket and Spade Brigade:

The sand is ideal for kids - clean and uncrowded

Caution is needed when swimming or paddling due to some steep shelves and strong currents. The resort itself has little to offer in the way of entertainment for the younger ones.
