What's it really like? Transfer time: Approx 30 minutes Location: Not for those seeking peace and quiet. Hersonissos is rammed with everything needed for an energetic holiday with the sort of nightlife that attracts young clubbers. It is a very hectic resort at the foot of the mountains, dissected by the busy main road which carries some fairly heavy traffic. This highway is lined with shops and bars so care is needed especially at night. Side roads lead down to the seafront and its neighbouring harbour, which despite all the tourism growth in the area has clung on to some of its traditional charm. This is the biggest package holiday destination on the island and things can get boisterous when the resort reaches capacity during July and August. Some areas may not be suitable for the less mobile due to steeps hills. Beaches: The usually crowded main resort beach is a mix of sand a shingle with rows of sun loungers for hire plus a comprehensive variety of water sports including parasailing and skiing. A flag system operates due to strong undercurrents. Some smaller rocky coves nearby. Some waterfront bars serve drinks and lunches. Days out: Approxiamately 3 miles away is 'Water City' - Crete's only water park. For those wanting culture Hersonissos has several museums - one is outdoors and depicts traditional Cretan life. It is also handy for Knossos. Boat trips along the coast and to Spinalonga. In resort there's an abundance of shops along the main road selling souvenirs, crafts and necessities. Nights out: Hersonissos is definitely geared-up for party animals and the nightlife is what attracts most visitors. There seems to be an endless choice of music-bars, tavernas, clubs and restaurants of all descriptions. Many along the promenade offer quick 'stomach-fillers' while those around the quayside are for more sophisticated dining. Bucket and Spade Brigade: A decent beach and it's close proximity to the water park make Hersonissos geographically suited for children. The busy road and noise may put some parents off. |
