What's it really like? Transfer time: Approx 90 minutes Location: Built around a modern village square with a relaxing fountain, Hanioti is one of the region's busiest resorts reflecting the traditional style; low-rise with red-tiled roofs. A lot of thought has gone into the design which creates a village atmosphere, albeit artificial protected by strict laws to prevent over-development. Tourist numbers swell in the peak summer months not only due to the vast numbers of British and Scandinvian visitors but also because of its popularity with Greeks who come in their droves for the beach. The main road lies at the rear of the resort and therefore much of the centre is free from heavy traffic making it ideal for families. Beaches: A Blue Flag winner for cleanliness, the beach is long and sandy with some natural shade supplemented by parasols. The town section of beach has a range of Watersports and can get overcrowded especially at weekends when locals reclaim their patch. Quieter spots can be found within walking distance. Days out: Most activities are centred around the beach supplemented by a go-karting track. Further afield are the sites of Mount Athos, accessible only by boat, while on land is the historic Petralona Cave where some remains of neanderthal man were found. Local shops provide all the holiday essentials in modern surroundings. Thessalonika has better shops and more sites (see Halikidiki main page). Nights out: A few low-key music bars with occasional karaoke and dancing. Most entertainment is hotel-based although the portrait artists in the town square draw quite a crowd. Restaurants offer varied tourist fayre with pizzas and burgers on most menus, there's also a Chinese. Bucket and Spade Brigade: Ideal for a traditional family holiday with a gently shelving sandy beach, traffic-free town centre and a shady park. |
