What's it really like? Transfer time: Approx 70 minutes Location: Yasmine Hammamet is a new purpose-built resort that embraces the traditional building styles of it neighbour, Hammamet. Yasmine is modern and thriving with pleasant and adequate tourist facilties set around its own medina and yachting marina. Close by is Tunisia's tourism capital, Hammamet which attracts about a third of all the country's visitors. Building regulations have resulted in a resort of stunning modern hotels all below tree height and mostly in the traditional Islamic-style architecture surrounded by lush gardens. The main centre is dominated by an authentic medina dating back to 1463 and attracts crowds of wary holidaymakers. There is also a modern commercial centre with restaurants and shops. All of the accommodation is beach-based and hoteliers tend to be responsible for the upkeep and cleanliness of their patch of sand, an idea which other countries could adopt. Due to the generous spacing of the hotels, guests often need to take a taxi into the town centre as the buses are unreliable. Beaches: Glorious and fairly well maintained sandy beaches with little natural shade but plenty of parasols close to the hotels. Lots of water sports available ... the sea gets deep close to the shore so care is needed. Traders peddle their wares along the beaches, usually baskets full of pottery, and they can become irritating. Days out: The medina is Hammamet tends to be frantic whereas its modern equivalent in Yasime is smaller but not as authentic. Both are well worth a visit for souvenir hunting (haggling is expected). The original medina in Hammamet offers glorious views from the ramparts. TIP: The warren of narrow streets can be a little daunting in the dark so leave before sundown. Camel rides are available along the beaches and Hammamet has two 18-hole golf courses nearby. Outings further afield include desert safaris and boat trips to find dolphins. Nights out: A few bars in both resorts with limited nightlife. Yasmine's marina is a tourist magnet in the evening and can be reached from the hotels by taxi. Most hotels provide their own 'live' entertainment. Bucket and Spade Brigade: A good choice for younger children thanks to the sandy beaches. Care is needed when swimming due to some deep patches. The theme parks and water park offer a welcome alternative but take care with young ones in the heat...especially at the theme park. |
