What's it really like? Transfer time: see below Gozo lies approximately 4 miles off the northern tip of Malta. Note: The Air Malta helicopter transfer between the main island and Gozo has been axed and is no longer in service Tourist are taken from Malta airport to Gozo via a coach journey (approx: 50 minutes) followed by a short ferry crossing (approx: 20 minutes). Location: Just 9 miles long by 4 miles wide, and yet Gozo feels spacious compared with the main island. Mainly featured in the more up market holiday brochures to attract the well-heeled, it is a pleasant island best suited to quiet-seekers. Tourism has been knocking at the door for years although it refuses to be spoilt. The countryside is green and fertile, dotted with tiny villages providing simple amenities. Vehicles are a rare sight in most parts although car hire is available. Marsalforn: Small fishing village with pebble beach, some shops and restaurants. Busy in high-season with day trippers. Xaghra: A rural village with some shops and bars dominated by an impressive ancient temple built using massive stones. Munxar: Inland village with a handful of shops, bars and restaurants approximately half a mile from the nearest beach.. Mgarr: Small harbour town with good choice of seafront bars. Set on a steep hill overlooked by a beautiful church. Xlendi: A little picturesque bay with shops and cafés and good bathing off the rocks Beaches: Ramla Bay has the best beach with red-toned sand which may stain some items of clothing if wet. Most are sandy and uncrowded. Limited water sports. Days out: Exploring the island. The Maltese rely on good bus services and the Gozitans are no exception. Boat trips to adjacent Malta. Shopping is low-key; the best variety is in Victoria. Nights out: Friendly bars and good restaurants scattered about in most villages, otherwise mainly hotel based entertainment. Bucket and Spade Brigade: For undemanding children wanting little more than a beach or a pool. Consider how they will cope with a helicopter flight or ferry crossing. |
