What's it really like? Transfer time: Approx 20 minutes Location: A fishing harbour/yachting marina overlooking spectacular Kommeno Bay is the main focal point of an otherwise featureless resort. Gouvia enjoys a rural location, set, as it is among olive groves and cypress trees, but don't be fooled into thinking it's a quiet little hamlet. This is one of the biggest resorts on the east coast attracting visitors from Germany, Scandinavia and Italy. Young people are drawn by the nightlife although it remains fairly tame compared to the likes of Kavos and Ipsos. Beaches: A long, narrow shingle beach supplemented by several smaller coves; often get crowded. Second only to Dassia for it's variety of water sports. Days out: Boat trips around the bay. Exploring the local countryside. 'Aqualand' - the island's only water park is close to Ermones where there is also a golf course. Gouves is also famous for its Shell Museum with a much envied collection of exhibits. Shops are concentrated along one short, narrow street in the centre; not much in the way of choice. Nights out: Good tavernas serving traditional Greek dishes, plus a few offering more varied dishes. Music-bars and a few open-air dance clubs in the centre. Less frenetic around the harbour. Bucket and Spade Brigade: Strictly for undemanding kids. |
