Gouves/Kokini Hani What's it really like? Transfer time: approx 20/30 minutes Gouves and Kokini Hani are similar resorts about 3 miles apart. Location: Gouves is a purpose-built resort with an artificial and yet, friendly village atmosphere. It is small and centred around one main tourist street with minimum facilities. Things just 'tick-over' nicely in this a no-fuss resort where the main attraction has to be the beaches. There is very little of interest in the immediate vicinity so be prepared to travel out to see any sights. Kokini Hani offers a few of life's simple pleasures; sun, sea and sand, set around the wide open spaces of the northern coastline. Some authentic architecture has survived the growth of tourism and there are moves afoot to preserve what is left. There is very little close-at-hand to amuse anyone in search of an energetic holiday, although it isn't short of the basics. The disadvantage is the rather busy road which cuts through the centre of the village. Good choice for the undemanding holidaymaker. Beaches: Gouves has three small beaches of good quality sand. Water sports available and the open aspect favours windsurfers. Kokini Hani has one long narrow strip of sand and pebbles. It rarely gets overcrowded although it can appear to be packed where there's row upon row of parasols. The shoreline is gently-shelving making it good for bathing although strong undercurrents are indicated by a flag system. Days out: Boat trips available. Both resorts are well-positioned for excursions to Spinalonga, Knossos and Heraklion. The waterpark near Hersonissos is about 15 minutes away. There are adequate grocery stores and souvenir shops on site...shop-a-holics will need to head for Heraklion to get their fix. Nights out: There is life after sundown and it remain fairly tame. Just a few tavernas and bars scattered about each resort, some providing 'live' music and occasional dancing. Bucket and Spade Brigade: Facilities in both resorts to suit families. Proximity to the water park is probably a bonus. |
