What's it really like? Transfer time: Approx 40 minutes Location: Golden Sands is scattered along several miles of the coast and boasts what is probably the best beach in Bulgaria. The town is set against the backdrop of the stunning national park - Zlatni Piasaci and the hilly location may not suit the less mobile. Like most of the more popular resorts in Bulgaria there is a shady side and a broad-minded approach is needed where prostitutes ply their trade. Oddly, the police have check-points stationed on the main routes into town to discourage private vehicles from entering so this can present a few headaches for car hire drivers The long promenade is pedestrianised and tree-lined which softens some of the more bland-looking hotels. Beaches: 3.5 km of glorious sand backed by a promenade in the resort and dunes on the outskirts of town. The sea here is shallow for some distance and the gently shelving beach is clean. There are life guards on duty throughout the summer and several snack bars plus parasols and a good range of watersports available. Days out: Shopping can be an exhausting experience with dozens of street traders competing for your custom so expect some verbal hassle near their stalls. A lot of 'black market' trading goes on, especially in CD's and DVD's. The shops in Golden Sands provide mainly tourist essentials at budget prices so there's little for anyone with more luxurious tastes. The city of Varna is close by and needs at least a couple of days to explore. In Varna you'll find a beautiful monastery preserved in the rock face while in the city centre there's an ancient square, roman fortress and the cathedral. The dolphinarium at Varna is only a stone's throw away. Nights out: Nightlife can get lively but mainly aimed at families with a fair selection of bars. Many local dishes are on the menu although fast food giants are also competing with the more traditional restaurants. Quality food is a rarity in Sunny Beach and youll often find only frozen or canned vegetables. Bucket and Spade Brigade: A great beach resort for the kids if they're content with that because there's little else to keep them amused.
