North/South What's it really like? Aghios Georgios South is also known as St. George South Transfer time: Approx 45 minutes Location: Similar, quiet resorts at opposite ends of the west coast. Both are purpose-built with little evidence of traditional Greece. Perfect for conventional beach holiday-types wanting no more than a tranquil setting, though some might feel isolated. North: For those seeking a quiet holiday surrounded by some beautiful scenery. Locals also favour the resort's beach at weekends although it rarely gets overcrowded except perhaps during Greek holidays. The road into the town is poor. South: Mainly for undemanding families and country walkers. One narrow main road through the town, lined with shops and bars. Rarely gets busy. Like its northern namesake the main selling point is the picturesque beach. Tip: Take a torch if venturing out at night due to unlit roads. Beaches: North: Quality sandy beach with a range of water sports; windsurfing being the most popular thanks to the sea breezes. South: Sandy and wide, surrounded by cliffs. One is backed by sand dunes, the other is lined by a few beach bars and has water sports. Days out: Boat trips operate from both resorts in addition to regular buses to Corfu Town. Bicycles are especially good for exploring AG Georgios South thanks to the flat terrain. Mini-markets and a few souvenir shops serve the two communities supplemented by market stalls. Nights out: Not much nightlife as such in either resort, just simple tavernas and the odd bar with 'live' music and some dancing. Certainly nothing rowdy. Restaurants tend to be traditional family-run offering a range of local specialties and the usual tourist fayre. Bucket and Spade Brigade: Highly suitable for smaller children who need nothing more than safe sand and sea. Older ones may find it a bit of a 'drag'. |
