What's it really like ? Transfer time; Approx 20 minutes Location: As get-away-from-it-all holidays go - this is among the best. Costa Caleta, formerly known as Caleta de Fuste has one long main street consisting of low-rise buildings where the main bars and restaurants are concentrated. The resort has expanded inland but try to choose an apartment closer to town otherwise you could find yourself isolated. Down a quiet tree-lined street is the man-made beach - set against a back-drop of hills and a few apartments. The most disappointing aspect of Caleta de Fuste is the harbour. It's merely a place for tying-up pleasure boats and little else...just one quayside restaurant. Beach: The broad stretch of sand at Caleta de Fuste is imported. The tide tends to come in quickly and the sun beds are laid out accordingly...if you move them away from the crowd for a siesta you could find yourself knee deep in water when you wake up. Otherwise the beach shelves gently into the sea making it ideal for children. An attempt has been made to create a narrow promenade with some shade along the back of the beach. Days Out: The beach is the resort's only form of daytime entertainment. Some water sports are available, though the real enthusiasts prefer more exposed sections of the coast. A Captain Nemo-type submarine offers undersea excursions. The resort, is well placed for exploring the rest of the island and hiring a car is the ideal way to do it because the roads are well laid and signposted. Driving north you'll see the landscape switch from volcanic black mountains to miles of sand sweeping down to the sea (see Correlejo). Heading south are the beautiful beaches of Jandia, the zoo and camel safari. For your shopping needs there are commercial centres with an adequate choice of souvenirs and tourist tat on offer. Night Out: Plenty of bars, supplemented by a couple of discos, though certainly nothing outrageous. Eating out can be quite cosmopolitan with Chinese, Italian and authentic Spanish rubbing shoulders with the usual touristy places. Hotels provide floor shows and karaoke.. Bucket and Spade Brigade: The beach is large and safe for kids although the tide comes in quiet rapidly. The sand tends to be hard and compact unlike other beaches on the island.
