Fethiye

What's it really like?

Transfer time: Approx 70 minutes

Location:

A notch above many of its rivals, Fethiye meets the demands of the tourist trade and successfully combines them with an authentic Turkish mood.

The picture postcard seafront cupped by green hills is a delight - alive with bustling pavement cafés overlooking the gentler scene of the yachts and fishing boats.

Narrow cobbled streets form a tight warren of interesting nooks and crannies whilst the marina remains the undisputed focal point.

The atmosphere is electric in high season when tourist numbers swell the already large resident population because Fethiye remains a working town.

Expect to be hustled into shops in the bazaar and offered an escort to the local sites, all friendly stuff.

May not be suitable for the less mobile due to hilly location.

Beaches:

None. The beaches at Calis and at Ölüdeniz are major attractions and well worth a visit by organized excursion or via boat from the marina. Scuba diving is popular and a great experience although the marine life isn't spectacular. See our health guide regarding scuba diving.

Days out:

Within walking distance are the famous rock tombs which have been cleverly restored.

Also in the hills above the town are the remains of an amphitheatre and a castle.

Fethiye has the beautiful lagoon at Ölüdeniz on its doorstep and is also closest to two prime ancient sites; the ruins of 4th century Xanthos and the ghost town of Kaya Koyu.

Shopping in town is enhanced by the bazaar area.

Nights out:

There's a good balance of evening activities mainly centred around the bars along the seafront.

Don't expect total peace and quiet though because 'live' music and dancing forms a big part of the night-time activities. Finding a decent meal is easy in Fethiye.

The quayside and narrow streets behind it are lined with good restaurants with variety to suit tourist tastes in addition to the demands of the locals who also eat here.

Bucket and Spade Brigade:

The lack of a beach may put some families off, otherwise a gentle resort close to some interesting sights which younger ones will enjoy exploring. May not be suitable for children in buggies due to some steep climbs, check with your tour operator.
