What's it really like? Transfer time: Approx 90 minutes Location: A traditional fishing village which has retained it's authentic Greek atmosphere without depriving its many visitors of their essential tourist needs. By day (but especially night) the attractive quayside is a hive of activity without ever becoming over-crowded like Aghios Nikolaos often does. This is the place where visitors come to browse around the shops, dine and generally soak up the atmosphere. Tourist development has expanded along the coast in pleasing low-rise blocks set against parched and unspoilt hills. Though some areas around Elounda are quite flat other parts are set on steep hills and maybe unsuitable for the less mobile or children in pushchairs - check with your tour operator. Beaches: A few attractive, postage stamp-sized town beaches with limited sunbathing space, supplemented by a larger man-made effort with a comprehensive range of water sports. During the peak summer months the beaches are prone to over-crowding. A flag system operates due to strong undercurrents. The main public beach is well protected and also has a lifeguard on duty a peak times. Days out: Every visitor should make time for the short boat ride to Spinalonga - a former leper colony which was abandoned and left to fall to ruin in the 1950's. ( Other excursion ideas are on our Crete main page). Elounda has numerous shops and market stalls. For an alternative day or evening out try Aghios Nikolaos (20 mins). Nights out: Smart bars and traditional tavernas jostle for space along the harbourside, some have dancing and 'live' music ... all very low-key. Restaurants cater for every taste including Chinese and Italian in addition to those around the harbour which serve up the day's best 'catch'. Bucket and Spade Brigade: A good choice for families who don't mind competing for space on the beaches. |
