What's it really like? Location: The approach to International Drive is unmistakable, its multi-storey skyline crowned by the summit of a water-ride at Wet 'n WildŽ. By virtue of its proximity to Disney and the many major-league attractions along its length I-Drive has become the most developed resort in Orlando. Hotels have mushroomed alongside apartment blocks and motels, and the modern sprawl is further expanding with the development of time-share complexes. It is constantly busy, appealing to those who want to be in the thick of the fun and the only escape is usually within the grounds of the hotels. Once you leave this sanctuary you will be sucked in and swept along by a tidal-wave of people especially during the peak times. International Drive is not only a conveyer-belt of pleasure it's a functional highway stretching 12 miles and visitors need to be on their mettle to avoid the traffic. Driving distances: Disney -12 miles, Sanford Airport - 59 miles, Orlando Airport - 8 miles.
Days out: 20 - 25 minutes away from Disney and a major fun factory itself, I-Drive is bursting with major attractions. Universal Orlando (tm), Wet 'n WildŽ and SeaWorldŽ are the big three supplemented by Ripley's Believe it Or Not, Skull Kingdom, Haunted House ... the list seems endless. The main 8 mile stretch of road is also the epicentre of Orlando's shopping experience with malls and 'factory outlets' competing for your credit cards. The best way to get around I-Drive is on the novel I-Ride trolley buses which operate daily between 7am and midnight Nights out: Most of the theme parks get their second peak in the evening, Disney draws the biggest crowds for the fireworks and parades. The rides stay open until late which is a bonus in the summer when the heat saps your energy. Fast food chains are certainly in the majority so gourmets will have to do some serious searching for their fodder and make reservations well in advance. Dinner shows include; Pirates, Arabian Nights or nostalgic dining at Church Street Station. Children: May be overwhelming for very small children. Kids under 12 travel free on the I-Ride trolley buses. The local McDonalds boasts the biggest children's play area of any of its branches in the world! |
