Dominican Republic

South Coast

What's it really like?

Bayahibe:

A laid back resort comprising large hotel complexes straddling the sandy coastline surrounded by lush vegetation. Beach lovers will be in heaven but there's little else to get the pulse racing.

The town has seen better days and poverty is in evidence although the locals have a reputation for their friendliness. Many of the homes double as bars and appear to be nothing more than makeshift tin shacks.

Beach: The sand on this side of the Dominican Republic is much softer and finer than that in the north. Palm trees provide plenty of natural shade and the sea is shallow for some way out making it perfect for children.

Bavaro:

The resort's beaches are among the finest in the Caribbean and are fringed by dense green palm trees along the coast. It seems to stretch for miles and many of the hotel complexes are a fair distance from the centre.

Shopping opportunities are extremely limited as with all the resorts.

Most visitors stay loyal to the facilities within their hotel.

Boca Chica

An unenchanting, and somewhat dreary town which plays host to lots of locals and city dwellers at weekends and public holidays.

The plus point is the natural scenery around the bay.

Boca Chica has become the poor relation to some of the more exclusive resorts along the coast and can hardly compete.

The area looks run-down and has possibly become far too busy for those wanting a get-away-from-it-all holiday.

At night the town can become 'lively' if not 'rowdy' when young tourists and local youths join the mix.

Beach: Protected from the elements by two tiny islands, the beach offers glorious fine sand and Water sports. there are boat trips to the islands and out to the coral.
