What's it really like? Location: Approx: 30 minutes from Orlando Airport. 60 minutes from Sanford Airport. The main advantage of staying at any of the Walt Disney World® Resort hotels is their proximity to the fun and first time visitors in particular will appreciate this. Once on site, from anywhere within the 47 square mile 'world' the Disney transportation system is free and runs like clockwork. If you are just doing the parks this could save you needing to hire a car - even though car rental is often 'free' the compulsory insurance, tax, fuel, surcharges all adds up to quite a tidy sum. Walking is out-of-the-question because the hotels are set in miles of woodland, surrounded by lakes and waterways.
Beaches: Man-made beaches of reasonable quality in some of the lake-side Disney hotels. Days out: Nine Disney theme parks all within easy access of the resort hotels (see theme park section). Disney boasts 5 PGA golf courses with more than a hundred scattered around Orlando. Horse riding, fishing and boat rental can easily be arranged. Shopping opportunities on site are fairly limited although Downtown Disney is the place to go for souvenir hunting.
Nights out: Most people head back to the parks for the evening shows and firework displays. Hotels have bar-room entertainment. Resort restaurants offer a limited variety and much of it being fast-food; eating in the theme parks is a better option. For the biggest choice of nightlife Downtown Disney has clubs, saloons and restaurants including McDonald's, Planet Hollywood and The Rain Forest Café. Children: Every resort hotel is fully geared-up for kids with play-areas, clubs and other activities for those days when you may want a rest from the 'parks'. Most swimming pools are patrolled by lifeguards. Try to request a room close to the food courts and bus stops. Children are allowed to play in the pools until late and some guests may experience noise. |
