What's it really like? Transfer time: Approx 90 minutes Location: Sun worshippers may find Puerto de la Cruz disappointing. Mount Teide - that 12 thousand foot volcano which dominates the island creates a micro-climate in the north so that the weather is less reliable - warm but often cloudy even in summer. There's more rain, too hence the lush vegetation. A lot of thought has gone into the planning of 'Puerto', especially where the old parts of town have been preserved to co-exist alongside the newer developments which are pleasantly landscaped. The effect is a more attractive, sophisticated resort than it's neighbours. Good examples of this are the promenade and giant 'lido' There is some concern over the street lighting at night and care should be taken in places. Beaches: To compensate for the generally poor beaches an 8 acre 'lido' has been created, with palm-fringed rock pools which shelve gently into the saltwater. The pools are beautifully illuminated at night thanks to state-of-the-art lighting. Fountains and waterfalls decorate the sunbathing terraces, and there are showers and restuarants on site. Days Out: Right on your doorstep is the popular Loro Parque which combines a zoo, dolphinarium and sea life centre. For some natural beauty Mount Teide beckons and is worth a day of anyone's holiday. Locally there's a good selection of shops to browse - even more choice and cheaper prices at Santa Cruz. Nights Out: Whilst offering numerous clubs and bars 'Puerto' isn't as heavily focused on banging decibels as its southerly neighbours. A good selection of restaurants to suit all tastes. Bucket and Spade Brigade: Children will enjoy the lido once they get used to the saltwater. For younger kids there's a playground, plus even more to keep them occupied at the sea life centre and zoo |
