What's it really like ? Transfer time: 30 minutes Location: The busiest and largest resort on the island, spanning out from the old fishing village. Tourism has taken over and most of it's in fairly good taste. For decades the older part of town has been exposed to the elements and in parts is beginning to look a bit tatty - some would say it all adds to the charm. Local by-laws have kept the developers from ruining the skyline and the only multi-storey developments are on the edge of the resort, the others are low-rise complexes. The main street is a modern mix of shops and neon lit bars and restaurants. The town is host to the island's main port, so in parts the quayside is more of a working area than touristy. Beaches: 7 miles of beautiful sand, against a backdrop of ... more sand. If it's sand you like ... this is the place! The untouched dunes have been elevated to national park status and are simply stunning. The breeze, especially near the sea can take your breath away and stone wind breaks have been built to offer some protection. Only strong swimmers (not children) should consider bathing in these waters due to strong currents. Nudists and naturists favour certain sections on the beach. Days Out: Corralejo is a windsurfers paradise so most local activities are beach-based. Small cruise boats offer trips along the coast, out to a tiny island nearby and ferries link Fuerteventura to nearby Lanzarote. Further afield are camel trips and jeep safaris. Nights Out: Bars, dancing and karaoke all along the main street and scattered around town. Nothing too outrageous. An ample choice of restaurants scattered around including some overlooking the port. Bucket and Spade Brigade: Perhaps not the best resort on the island for kids unless there's entertainment going on back at base. Remember the coast here is exposed to strong breezes making the sea a dangerous place for young children. Nudism is allowed on certain sections of the beach. |
