What's it really like ? Location: Ciudadela is a bustling Spanish town which was once the former capital of Menorca and still is the home of the vast majority of islanders. Most of the residents live in traditional houses along quaint little streets which are steeped in history and lead to the main square or the busy harbour. Beware the fiendish one-way system and pedestrianised zones if you're driving. The 14th-century cathedral and even the police station are tourist attractions thanks to their attractive architecture while the nearby bars attract the hourdes for different reasons. Daytrippers come to Ciudadela in their droves for the shopping and the culture so the population can quadruple during the summer days but at night the town settles down and becomes less chaotic. On the outskirts of town is a less elegant area consisting of industrial units and some residential blocks. Beach: The town beach is a tiny, sandy cove which is suprisingly tranquil most of the time and this is supplimented by the bay at Sa Caleta, about a mile away which is much more touristy. Out and About: The atmosphere of the town itself is much more business-like in the centre while the main harbour road is where the holiday mood exists. Here you'll find dozens of restaurants, street cafés and bars. For the more adventurous in search of the traditional taste of Spanish there are lots of tiny restaurants tucked away near the town centre. For those wanting to explore further afield there's a bus station in the centre with transport to any destination on the island. Boat trips are popular from the harbour and many use these like water-taxis. Transfer time (approx): 50 minutes |
